Overview
Imagine a bustling hub where connections between patients and healthcare clients for clinical trial studies and new commercial devices come to life. At 83 Bar, our dedication lies in streamlining the process for all stakeholders involved in clinical trials and healthcare studies. With every connection made, we move one step closer to advancing healthcare and improving lives.
In our world, digital marketing reigns supreme. Our digital marketing team utilizes a suite of powerful tools—Campaign Configuration, Campaign Builder, and Survey Builder—to craft compelling campaigns aimed at reaching out to patients for clinical trial participation. With precision and strategy, we lay the groundwork for impactful patient recruitment.
But our journey doesn't end there. Enter our dedicated team of nurses and Call Center agents, armed with our Call Center web application. Their mission? To contact, educate, and recruit patients with care and efficiency. Behind the scenes, the Agent Scheduling App ensures seamless coordination, allowing Call Center Managers to organize agents' schedules with precision.
In the quest for patient-doctor connections, we offer the Physician Finder App—an essential tool utilized by both agents and patients to locate offices and providers. Meanwhile, the Office Management App supports medical offices in patient recruitment, while the Activation Hub empowers users within physician's offices to manage patient journeys and information with ease.
And what about the patients themselves? They remain at the heart of our endeavor. With our Study Tracker application, patients can monitor and engage in real-time communication during studies, ensuring a comprehensive cycle of care and support.
My role and timeframe
I participated in a cross-functional remote team as the sole Product designer. The team consisted of the Product Owner, Project Manager, Front End, and Back End Developers, Quality Assurance Specialists, etc. I worked from the research phase to testing with our real users. The project lasted 1.5 months (November to December) and the application was launched in February.
Starting with research / The Problem
In this case study, our project aimed to empower patients by providing them with an effective means to track their medical studies and stay informed about the process and required tasks in real-time. To achieve this goal, we conducted several sessions of evaluative research to gain a deep understanding of the project requirements, end users, and user flow within the app.
Additionally, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of competitor applications to understand the flow and process used by other industry players. Through these research efforts, we identified a critical problem: patients need to be in control of the process in real-time to easily receive and deliver necessary information to stakeholders, thereby facilitating communication.
This insight served as a guiding principle as we embarked on designing a solution that would empower patients to actively participate in their medical studies and ensure seamless communication with stakeholders. By addressing this key challenge, our aim was to create a user-centric app that would enhance the overall experience for patients and streamline the study tracking process.
Problem: Patients must be in control of the process in real-time, to be able to easily receive and deliver the necessary information to stakeholders and thus facilitate communication.
Our Persona
From our interviews, we have learned a few things about our users:
Comprehensive Information: This user seeks detailed information about his study, including progress updates, upcoming tasks, and any changes in protocol. He values transparency and wants to stay informed at all times.
Real-Time Communication: This user prefers to be in constant communication with the company processing her study, but he wants this communication to be effortless and streamlined. He expects prompt responses to any queries or concerns he may have.
Technology Literacy: While this user is proficient in basic technology use, he considers himself not very tech-savvy. He prefers intuitive interfaces and straightforward processes that do not require extensive technical knowledge.
With the information collected from the interviews, we structured our personas and users' journeys.

The solution | Wireframes
We created a solution to be used on a mobile phone and on a desktop as a web based app. The solution was thought to present the study steps/process in cards so that the patients had all the information available. This way also, allows the company to reuse the structure of the built in app on other clients and studies.
On the other hand, a two factor authentication was implemented on the login in order to protect the user's privacy.

Outcome. What's next?
Moving forward, our focus will be on enhancing the accessibility features of our study tracking app. While we've already implemented a minimum viable product based on initial feedback, we recognize the importance of accommodating extreme users who may face specific challenges with accessibility. To address this, our next version will prioritize the following:
Accessibility Enhancements: We'll conduct thorough accessibility audits to identify areas where improvements can be made. This may include enhancing screen reader compatibility, optimizing keyboard navigation, and ensuring color contrast for users with visual impairments.
User Testing with Extreme Users: We'll engage with extreme users, such as those with severe visual or motor impairments, to gather firsthand feedback on their experiences with the app. This will help us identify pain points and areas for improvement specific to their needs.
Iterative Design Process: We'll adopt an iterative design approach, incorporating feedback from extreme users into each iteration of the app. This allows us to continuously refine and enhance the accessibility features based on real-world usage and user feedback. By placing a greater emphasis on accessibility in the next version of our product, we aim to ensure that all users, regardless of their abilities, can effectively utilize and benefit from our study tracking app.
